Quote
"By migrating our proxy servers to Squid on Linux we were able replace Microsoft ISA and reduce our dependency on Active Directory. We have found this strategy to be more reliable, secure, high performance and low cost."

What is Pepsi?
www.pepsico.com
PepsiCo is a world leader in convenient foods and beverages, with revenues of about $27 billion and over 143,000 employees.
Business Situation
Pepsi's UK network infrastructure is massive by any standards. Pepsi were looking to make significant Windows licensing savings over multiple UK-based sites.
IT staff based at their head office in Theale were particularly keen to replace Microsoft ISA due its high cost, poor performance and security vulnerabilities. However, the chosen replacement still needed to transparently authenticate users against Active Directory.
The Solution
Microsoft ISA was replaced with Squid. Transparent authentication for end users with Active Directory was achieved using Samba components, specifically WINBIND.
The advances in this project formed the basis for chapter 12 in John Terpstra's "Samba by Example".
Further projects at Pepsi included migrating their DHCP and DNS services from Windows to Linux.
The Benefits
- Massive reduction in licensing costs
- A caching proxy server that authenticates transparently with Active Directory.
- More control for IT team
- Works well alongside Windows and Netware run network services
- Reduced dependence on Active Directory
