What is Pinder Set?
www.pindarset.com
Pindar Set are a division of the GA Pindar & Son organisation, a leading print and electronic media company who employ nearly 2,500 people across the world.
Pindar Set specialises in the provision of pre-press, databasing and
automated classified directory pagination services for Yell the publishers of Yellow Pages in the UK, Yellow Book in the US and Yell Publicidad in Spain and LATAM.
Sirius Corporation is the technical support provider for Pindar Set's
use of the enterprise-class Open Source database, PostgreSQL.
Business Situation
Pindar Set has made the strategic decision to move many of its complex business applications away from Oracle. As part of this process, Sirius was asked to migrate a data warehousing application used for invoicing and compliance reporting at Yellow Pages to PostgreSQL.
Beyond the obvious cost savings to be made by migrating in-house applications to PostgreSQL, Pindar Set also required performance tuning to be undertaken on their existing systems.
The Solution
The new system consists of two integrated components - a PostgreSQL database server instance which acts as the data warehouse storage backend, and a database interface (DBI) written in Perl that allows database access for client applications, specifically Crystal Reports.
The PerlDBI enables intensive reporting queries to be executed using Crystal Reports without affecting the performance of the live application.
The Benefits
- Massive performance benefits - up to seven times faster
- Zero annual licensing fees
- Enterprise scalability
- Reduced lock-in to proprietary software providers
