Local council introduces open source email - New Media Age
Carmarthenshire County Council is to become the first UK council to provide open source email for pupils and teachers, according to reports.
Almost 40,000 pupils and teachers will have access to the system, to be built by Sirus Corporation, on completion at the end of October.
Open source software allows users, under a copyright license, to change and modify its code as they see fit. This lets users tailor it to match their own systems and existing software - in this case that of a educational network.
Each user will potentially have access to their own mailbox, with staff able to manage and create accounts.
