Publisher chooses open source to run BI systems - Computer Weekly PDF Print E-mail
European open source services provider Sirius Corporation is to support Usborne Books at Home's web-based business intelligence systems running on Linux.

Sirius says the move is further evidence of open source software's move into mission-critical applications. The company believes that until now the lack of truly capable, 24/7 support has prevented some organisations migrating web-based applications to open source platforms.

Usborne Books at Home is the direct sales division of children's publisher Usborne Publishing Ltd. Sirius attributes its success with Usborne to its knowledge of the LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) and its willingness to liaise with third-party application suppliers.

David Harte, general manager at Usborne Books at Home, says, "We selected Sirius after they demonstrated the experience and technical skills to manage major web-based applications on Linux."

Mark Taylor, CEO of Sirius Corporation, says, "The performance and lower TCO benefits of open source make it the obvious choice for hosting web-based applications."
